PHAT FAQs
How easy are our rooftop tents to set-up and pack away?
Our accessories are pretty user friendly. Upon collection, we’ll run through the set-up, pack down instructions, and we’ll also be available to help if there are any issues on your journey. Please allow at least 15 minutes for a run down with our equipment before we get you on the road.
Is there a Bond?
Yes. The Bond is an authorised payment held for the Insurance Excess in the event of an accident, damage, loss or liability resulting in a claim. Our standard excess/bond amount is $1500 but there are options available to reduce the excess and bond held that can be selected during the checkout process.
Where are the vehicles located / where do I pick them up and drop them off?
Our 4WD rental vehicles are located in Christchurch and must be returned to our Christchurch depot but, we can arrange an alternative location at request for a fee prior to pick up or drop off. Just let us know and we’ll see what we can do!
What payment methods do you accept/How do I pay for my booking?
We use a secure payment provider called Stripe which allows an easy online payment method via credit card or Debit card, there is an additional 2.7% processing fee in addition to the hire. We currently accept Mastercard, Visa and American Express. Alternatively, we have Eftpos available for payment on collection. Processing fees are non-refundable.

Where can i go Camping?
Unfortunately our camping set-up is not self-contained but there are several spots you can still enjoy with our rooftop tent, head along to Campsite Finder and check out some places to stay along your adventure
Can I let loose off-road?
No. Sorry guys. We’re pretty proud of our equipment and would rather our equipment be available for as many adventurers’ as possible. This means treating our vehicles with respect and avoiding the off-road scene. For more information on where you can or can’t drive, please take a look at our Phat T&Cs or give us a call. We may have an option available for those that do want to get loose off-road.
What happens if I need to return the vehicle early?
Refunds are not granted for early returns of our rental vehicles, a refund may be provided in extenuating circumstances and at the sole discretion of Phat Rentals. Feel free to get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
Is there a minimum hire period?
Yes. All our vehicles are hired on a minimum 2-day hire term. If available, our vehicles may be hired for a shorter hire term, but a day rate will be applied for any hire term less than 24 hours. Give us a call to discuss options.
Is there a minimum age for hiring?
Yes, the minimum age to hire our vehicles is 21.
TOP 10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT DRIVING IN NEW ZEALAND
- Keep LEFT! We drive on the left-hand side of the road.
- Always wear your seat belt. Everyone in your vehicle must wear a seatbelt, and children must be secured in an approved child seat. Your rental vehicle company can rent child seats to you if you didn’t bring your own
- Keep to the speed limit and always stop at STOP signs.
- Always slow down to observe recommended speeds around bends.
- Overtake other vehicles only when it’s safe to do so. Use passing lanes whenever possible, and never cross a solid yellow line on your side of the centre line.
- Stay well-rested. Plan to only drive 1 – 2 hours at a time, and take regular breaks during your journey to stretch your legs.
- Drive to the conditions. You’ll need to reduce your speed if it’s raining, icy or snowing, windy, or if you’re in a roadworks area. Ask your accommodation provider if in doubt or visit Drive Safe for more travel tips
- Use this Driving Time and Distance Calculator or GPS to estimate driving times while planning your journey. Driving in New Zealand can often take longer than expected due to our winding roads.
- Do not drink and drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a crime in New Zealand and strictly enforced by police, with severe penalties for offenders.
- It’s illegal to use a mobile phone while driving in New Zealand. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over at a rest area or in a safe place.
